I believe that you should experience as much as possible so I decided on a complete career change and have started my business Artesan Crafts as a handmade cosmetics business in Montrose, Scotland. It would be easy to move Dundee and get more customers but I like Montrose - there are lots of great things about the town.
We make cosmetics with simple and natural active ingredients. Most of our products are 100% natural and suitable for vegans. No parabens, sulfates or animal tested products are present in the products.
What makes me different? As a craft maker in cosmetics I have an advantage over others having experienced chemistry in a lab and at university. I research and make my own recipes to a high standard of quality, ensuring consistent production quality. I make small batches but am focused on advancing to larger scale production while keeping the handmade look of the product.
I started making soap as a hobby and when I returned to Scotland after many years abroad, I made soap to sell at craft fairs. My interest in cosmetics grew and after meeting many customers with skin issues and allergies caused by chemicals on skin contact, I decided to focus on natural products, recyclable materials, and a reasonable price for customers. Many people are unable to use essential oils and I am trying to find botanical and herbal solutions for active ingredients. I ran out of room in my Ferryden flat so rented a shop in 2016 to make and sell my products.
I am excited to announce that I'm changing my cosmetics brand name and logo. I was using JMCosmetics but have been searching for a better brand name for a while - now I have one and I will be rebranding all my products to SeaSplang Beauty.
The brand represents a simpler approach to cosmetic products while retaining the customer experience and expectation of the product and uses naturally derived base and active ingredients in original recipes providing customers with an alternative to chemically complex cosmetics, making great cosmetic gifts. The current range includes facial care, lip care, bath and shower products and solid fragrances inspired by the glens and coastlines of North East Scotland.
The brand will also have its own Facebook page so that I can separate the shop and the cosmetic making a bit more, although the shop will be stocking the products which are all handmade in Montrose.
