MCTAVISH DESIGNS
ARTIST JOURNALS
At the end of December 2017, I finally came to the last page in my cherished leather sketchbook. I tried looking for another one around town and online, but couldn't find exactly what I wanted in terms of paper quality and size. Finally I decided to just go ahead and make my own. After lots and lots of trial and error, I finally came up with my Artists Journal. A mix of black, cartridge and watercolour paper, this was a book that could be used as a travel journal, scrap book, bullet journal or sketchbook all in the one place. I enjoyed making it so much that I decided to make a few more and before I knew it, McTavish Designs was born.
Now, my journals are available in many different sizes and leather colours, using 140gsm cartridge, 230gsm black, and 300gsm cold pressed watercolour paper. More recently I have been trying different pieces of hardware on the leather using hinges and hasps to create a few one-of-a-kind journals. I also have a newfound love for setting rivets. Not sure that there is anything more pleasing than the sound of hammering metal on a tiny anvil. My grandfather was the blacksmith in Drumoak and would hammer away on a much larger anvil from dawn to dusk. I guess it must be in the genes.
I use locally made paper and bind all my books by hand.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have an idea or a request you'd like to make.
